Year 1 curriculum


Speaking and Listening: pupils talk about matters of personal interest, listen to others and reply appropriately. They speak audibly and can make themselves understood to children and adults. They can extend their vocabulary and provide more detail, in order to clarify meaning when talking about their ideas, something that has happened to them or something they have seen or heard.

Reading-word reading: sound out correctly all 40+graphemes, read accurately by blending sounds together

Reading-comprehension: develop pleasure in reading, understand books and explain what is read to them, participate in discussion about books

Writing: compose a sentence orally before writing, sequencing sentences to form short narrative, re-read to check if it makes sense, finger spacing, join sentences using ‘and’, begin to punctuate sentences using full stops and capital letters

Spellings: spell words containing each of the 40+phonemes, name letters of the alphabet, add prefixes and suffixes

Handwriting: begin to form lower case letters in the correct direction, form capital letters, and form digits 0-9



Number and place value: counting to 100
Addition and Subtraction: to 20
Multiplication and Division: simple introduction to counting objects and pictures
Fractions: a half, a quarter
Measurement: length, weight, capacity, time
Shape: 2D and 3D
Position and Direction: quarter to three quarter turns



Plants: identify common plants and structure
Animals incl. humans: identify, describe and compare common animals, label parts of the human body
Everyday materials: identify materials and their properties
Seasonal changes: observe weather and seasons




Important location and events: Rome and the Colosseum
Important individuals: Leonardo da Vinci
Transport through time: compare aspects of different periods now and then



Place of knowledge: Rome
Weather and Seasons:key physical features, including: beach, cliff, coast, forest, hill, mountain, sea, ocean, river, soil, valley, vegetation, season and weather
Field work and own locality study: study school grounds and environment


Developing skills: drawing painting, sculpture, collage
Study of artists: Andy Goldsworthy, Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent Van Gogh, Jackson Pollock
Knowledge and Understanding: Roman mosaics, Natural Sculptures, Still Life, ‘Drip Style ‘Painting, Sketching


Physical Education

Sport and Games: running, jumping, throwing, catching, balance,
Team games: develop simple tactics for attacking and defending
Perform dances using simple movement patterns


Understand algorithms: understand that computer programs execute by following precise instructions
Computer Coding using Microsoft Office (word) to write and add pictures
Recognise ICT beyond school


Focus: Listening, composing, singing, playing percussion and other instruments, recording and performing. 

Information for parents

Children should keep a named pair of boots at school for when it is wet. They should also bring to school on Mondays, and take home on Fridays, a sports bag containing T-shirt, shorts, gym shoes (scarpette di ginnastica), trainers and (in winter) a tracksuit.

Children should also have a New School book bag. This can be purchased from the school office.
