The Curriculum - Areas of Development

We follow the English National Curriculum for the Early Years Foundation Stage. As our children are from international backgrounds, and we are based in Italy, we adapt the curriculum to meet our specific needs. The Curriculum is divided into 7 areas of development, outlined below.

In addition to this, the  following  dispositions attitudes and skills are developed throughout.

  • Finding out and exploring

  • Playing with what they know

  • Being willing to have a go

  • Being involved and concentrating

  • Keeping trying

  • Enjoying achieving what they set out to do

  • Having their own ideas

  • Making links

  • Choosing ways to do things

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • developing a positive sense of themselves and others

  • forming positive relationships and developing respect for others

  • developing social skills and learning how to manage their feelings

  • understanding appropriate behavior in groups

  • having confidence in their own abilities.


Communication and Language

  • experiencing a rich language environment

  • developing their confidence and skills in expressing themselves speaking and listening in a range of situations

Physical Development

  • having opportunities to be active and imaginative

  • developing co-ordination, control and movement

  • understanding the importance of physical activity and making healthy choices in food



  • linking sounds and letters

  • beginning to read and write

  • being stimulated by a wide range of reading materials



  • developing skills in counting

  • understanding and using numbers

  • calculating simple addition and subtraction problems

  • describing shapes, spaces and measures

Understanding the World

  • exploring and observing

  • finding out about people , places .technology and the environment

  • making sense of their physical world and community

Expressive Arts and Design

  • exploring and playing with a large range of materials and media

  • sharing thoughts,  ideas and feelings through art, music, dance, role play, design and technology
