Programme for Year 1

Welcome to Year 1! Why don’t you come in and have a look around? We are busy learning to read and write; to count, add and take away; to draw, paint and make things; as well as learning all about the world around us.

We are very lucky to have our own terrace, which we use for all sorts of activities. In the Summer Term we grow our own radishes and lettuces, as well as sunflowers and other plants.

It is exciting becoming independent learners and Kate helps us remember that, “Year 1 is a panic free zone”, so we never need to worry. Every day we can feel our brains working and growing while we explore and have fun.



Speaking and Listening: Pupils talk about matters of personal interest, listen to others and reply appropriately. They speak audibly and can make themselves understood to children and adults. They can extend their vocabulary and provide more detail, in order to clarify meaning when talking about their ideas, something that has happened to them or something they have seen or heard.

Reading: Pupils recognise familiar words in simple settings, sometimes with support. They use their knowledge of letters and sounds to read words and to understand them when reading aloud, sometimes with support. They can talk about the things they like or dislike, about poems, stories and non-fiction that they read.

Writing: Pupils’ writing communicates meaning through simple words and phrases. In their reading or their writing, pupils are aware of how full stops and capital letters are used.

Handwriting: Letters are usually clearly shaped and correctly orientated.


Number: Counting; combining sets; number patterns; number problems; number bonds; subtraction facts; difference; addition facts; number facts within 20; doubling.

Shape: Recognising and naming 2D and 3D shapes; drawing 2D shapes.

Measure: Approximating lengths; using rulers; estimating and measuring capacity; balancing weight.

Handling Data: Collecting information; using diagrams.

Singing: A large variety of songs aimed at developing musicality; creativity; sensitivity and improving skills in rhythm; counting; language and co-ordination.

Listening and responding: A range of recorded music.

Performing: Percussion instruments in various structured situations.

Information for parents

Children should keep a named pair of boots at school for when it is wet. They should also bring to school on Mondays, and take home on Fridays, a sports bag containing T-shirt, shorts, gym shoes (scarpette di ginnastica), trainers and (in winter) a tracksuit.

Children should also have a New School bookbag. This can be purchased from the school office.
