The English Education System
|
In the English system formal schooling begins at 5 years of age and is compulsory until 16 years of age. Students intending to continue their studies at university must complete another 2 years. Public examinations are taken at the end of Year 11 (GCSE), Year 12 (AS level) and Year 13 (A2 level). This makes a total of 13 years, organised as follows:-

The Middle and Senior years are organised as follows:
Years 7, 8 and 9 or Middle school, students follow courses in all subjects.
Years 10 and 11 students follow 2 year courses leading to GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) examinations. Some choice of courses is made.
Years 12 and 13 students follow 2 year courses leading to AS (Advanced Supplementary) level and to A2 (Advanced) level examinations; they usually study three to five subjects.
At The New School non-exam English is also part of the programme.
