Years 12 – 13
|
AS levels (Advanced Supplementary) are taken at the end of Year 12 and A2 levels are taken at the end of Year 13. Students usually sit AS examinations in 4 or 5 subjects and sit A2 examinations in 3 or 4 subjects.
Students base their choice of subjects on requirements for University courses and personal preferences. However, students wishing to study a subject at A-level must have at least a grade B in that subject at GCSE and at least 5 GCSE passes (grades A to C).
Students should expect at least 8 hours of independent study per week per subject.

Each subject has four to six exam papers. Sciences have a practical exam and languages have an oral. Courses are modular and students may sit examinations throughout the 2 year period rather than having the whole course examined at the end of Year 13.
Mock examinations are given in the February preceding the final exams. Students applying to universities are offered places based on their predicted A2 grades.
Exams take place in January, May and June. Students are granted a period of study leave prior to the exams during which they should study at home.
Final exam scripts are graded in England and the results are issued to the school in August.
Grades range from A to F, with A to E being considered a pass.
