Aims of the course:

  • To develop the ability to use the modern language effectively for the purpose of practical communication;
  • To encourage pupils to develop an understanding of the grammar and syntax of the target language;
  • To offer insights into the culture and civilisation of the relevant foreign country;
  • To develop an awareness of the nature of the language and language learning;
  • To provide enjoyment and intellectual stimulation;
  • To encourage positive attitudes towards foreign language learning and speakers of foreign languages and a sympathetic approach to other cultures and civilisations;
  • To use the target language as frequently as possible in lessons and in the examination.

The main applications of these criteria for classroom practice are that the foreign language is always introduced and practised in context; it is topic-related rather than grammar related and familiarity with the foreign language culture is essential.

In class pupils listen to CDs to improve listening comprehension skills.  There is constant emphasis on the spoken language.  A wide yet practical vocabulary is included at GCSE.  Consolidation work set for homework is likely to be given at least once a week and pupils should also expect on written homework per week to be handed in for marking.

In general, the emphasis in the GCSE course falls on speaking, understanding and writing authentic Italian, French or Spanish.

Foundation (grades ‘C’ to ‘G’) or higher (grades ‘A*’ to ‘G’)

Topics covered:

At home and abroad; education, training and employment; house, home and daily routine; media, entertainment and youth culture; social activities, fitness and health.

Assessed:

By examination, at the end of the 2 year course.

Three papers (listening, reading and writing) and an oral examination.

The oral exam will consist of a ten minute taped interview with the teacher / examiner.

Some of the questions on the reading and listening parts of the exam will be in English but most will be in the target language and based on authentic items such as weather forecast, advertisement or station announcements.

Writing

The written part is likely to include formal and informal letter writing, or a description of a real-life incident. There is no translation exercise.

Leads to:

AS and A-level French, Italian and Spanish.  The study of these languages at advanced level will provide the students with the opportunity to become fluent in another language and acquire a qualification that is highly regarded by British universities.
